Mid Week/ Mitad de semana

Hello friends and family!! We are getting to mid-week its now Wednesday May 14th. It has been very windy down here in Mexico and a little bit of cold weather but have no fear! We are staying warm and yes, getting to make friends along the way. So far, we have had many fun experiences such as Going tide pooling every morning where we got to meet many small creatures. We have experienced different beaches with the upmost number of small creatures anywhere from Cnidarians to bigger sea creatures such as Cephalopods.

 CEDO (Few steps away from where we are staying), CEDO has collectively been one of my personal favorites. Theres something just so relaxing about waking up early listening to waves as well as sleeping listening to the ocean. With very minimal heavy rocks we were able to lift majority of the rocks.

Vino de mar which was a lot rockier then the last with beautiful boulders we were able to find octopus under rocks. Vino del mar had a lot for us in store with an incredible amount of Sea cucumber we were able to find!

Cholla Bay Is where we found the most! With a total of 5-6 octopuses with a lot less rocks than the rest cholla was much sandier with the most diversity in marine invertebrates. Below I am attaching pictures from the trip so far. So far, the stars of the show have been the Two spot octopus who have been feeling very energetic and photogenic with all our picture of them. They are most seen in Puerto Penasco Mexico. They are known for the Two spots near in the top of the head.

¡Hola amigos y familia! Ya casi es mitad de semana; es miércoles 14 de mayo. Ha hecho mucho viento aquí en México y un poco de frío, ¡pero no se preocupen! Nos mantenemos abrigados y, sí, también hemos hecho amigos. Hasta ahora, hemos tenido muchas experiencias divertidas, como ir a las pozas de marea todas las mañanas, donde pudimos ver muchas criaturas pequeñas. Hemos experimentado diferentes playas con la mayor cantidad de criaturas pequeñas, desde cnidarios hasta criaturas marinas más grandes, como cefalópodos.

CEDO (a pocos pasos de donde nos hospedamos), CEDO ha sido uno de mis favoritos. Es muy relajante despertarse temprano escuchando las olas y dormir escuchando el océano. Con muy pocas rocas pesadas, pudimos levantar la mayoría.

Vino de Mar, que era mucho más rocoso que el anterior, con hermosas rocas, encontramos pulpos debajo de las rocas. ¡Vino de Mar nos tenía preparado un montón, con una increíble cantidad de pepinos de mar que encontramos!

La Bahía Cholla es donde encontramos la mayor cantidad! Con un total de 5 o 6 pulpos y muchas menos rocas que el resto, Cholla era mucho más arenosa y con la mayor diversidad de invertebrados marinos. A continuación, adjunto fotos del viaje hasta el momento. Hasta ahora, las estrellas del espectáculo han sido los pulpos de dos manchas, que se han mostrado muy enérgicos y fotogénicos en todas nuestras fotos. Se les ve con más frecuencia en Puerto Peñasco, México. Son conocidos por sus dos manchas cerca de la parte superior de la cabeza.

Tide pooling and Phyla Fun

Yesterday we all headed down to the rocky intertidal shore at Vina Del Mar to go tide pooling. The rocks were massive and considerably difficult to traverse. I think everybody fell at least once. No major injuries though! We worked our way to the rocks just in front of the water first, in order to get a chance of seeing that area before the tide started to come in and cover it up. We found a wide array of organisms, including swimming crabs, porcelain crabs, hermit crabs, turban snails, blennies, brittle stars, sunstars, sea urchins, two-spotted octopus, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, anemones, isopods, chiton, etc. My personal favorites were the brittle stars and the marine isopod. Brittle stars are in the Phylum Echinodermata, which also includes sea stars, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and sand dollars. First Day!

Our journey began yesterday morning when we loaded into the vans and took off from the MCC Red Mountain campus.  We arrived at CEDO yesterday afternoon and settled into our new home for the week. Later that evening, we ventured downtown and had dinner at a restaurant with a scenic view.  Some of the students went down to the shore to do some night tidepooling and saw a few cool organisms. The real fun began this morning, when we went out for our group first tidepooling excursion just a short walk away from CEDO. I'll let the students share what we found 😀. We are planning to finish up our lecture material today so that we can focus on field work the rest of the week--we have a full schedule including tidepooling at rocky shore and sandy habitats, kayaking an estuary, and snorkeling with sea lions! I'm looking forward to the fun-filled week ahead! -Whitney
