estuary kayaking

we went kayaking in an estuary yesterday and learned about what happens when you mix salt and fresh water. we saw a lot of birds and crabs who make the estuary home. the estuary is like a nursery for a whole bunch of marine animals such as crabs, fish and even birds. estuaries also make a good resting spot for migratory birds who fly south for the winter. estuaries provide shelter and food to the species that live there. we kayaked through a channel in the back of the estuary where there were many plants and crabs. some of the plants you could eat. i tried some and they are were very salty but actually pretty good.

i also learned that underneath the sand and mud in estuaries are like a whole other world. crabs, clams, worms, and so much more make holes and burrows in the sediment.

here is a video of the bottom of the estuary

notice all of the little holes dug into the sand. those were all made by tons of different animals that live down deep in the sand.
